Last weekends proud Mummy moment involved watching my Eldest appear in a youth production of “Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat”, as one of Josephs brothers. It was an amazing production and Kai performed his socks off, as always (I’m allowed to be biased).
In the musical Joseph has dreams including one about Sheaths of corn that turn and bowed to his. Joseph is able to interpret dreams – understand messages in the dreams to help with his waking life. Throughout the show Joseph uses the interpretations to help others understand their messages or signs too. After helping a fellow prisoner in jail, his skills are recommended to the Pharaoh who is having dreams about cows. This then leads to Joseph creating food rationing and helping the people Egypt survive 7 years of famine and reuniting him with his brothers who all are bowing at his feet – like the sheaths of corn in Josephs earlier dream.
So where am I going with this?
Joseph saw dreams as signs or messages indicating something that would happen in the future.
“ We all dream a lot” is a line from the show. And yes we all do – not everyone brings back their dreams when they awaken in the morning – I am generally one of these. But we do dream if you remember it or not.
What are dreams.
There are many different theories as to what dreams are and what they do. But to me dreams can be a mixture of different things. You might be trying to make sense of what’s been happening in your life. Your brain processing and filing memories away ready for the next day.
I also think we can also go traveling in our dream states, back to our Higher self or higher consciousness. To be taught, to receive instructions, or just to be.
I way I see it, is that the dreams we have may bring back include codes, signs or even memories of our night time work. As with most psychic work the interpretation of these dream is personal. For example If I saw a flock of birds, I might associate the meaning of nature, someone else might see the type of bird and the message might be one of death or remembering loved ones who have already passed.
We all have an internal “dictionary” of symbols that will vary depending on our personal experience. These signs and symbols might show up in dreams, meditations or even might crop up repeatedly in your daily life.
Reading dream interpretation books or websites, might be a good place to start to get general meanings, we should also ask ourselves what does this mean to me.
Keeping a dream journal is a great things to do. Basically pop a notebook on your bedside table and jot down your dreams as soon as you wake before you have time to forget the details. By keeping a record you can look for patterns and recurring themes in your dreams. – For example the last few days my dreams have been based on something we’re doing as a family next week. They are not for telling the future (at least I hope as they were a bit bizzare) but it’s obviously something I’m working on.
I always keep a notebook beside my bed for writing down dreams. More often than not I don’t bring back any recall of my dreams, or I become awake and need to go to the bathroom before i get a chance to run through in my mind what happened ready to write it down.
When I do manage to jot down my dreams, they’re generally fall into a few categories.
The people in them are general either family members or characters from tv programmes.
Sometimes they star people I know now, but in situations that haven’t happened, for example dreaming about my Mums house in great detail although the house wasn’t her current house or anywhere she has lived, but I’m sure it ws supposed to be on the same place is the current one is now??.
Other times it might be based on a situation from my past. For example I’ve often found myself back on duty as a nurse, or waiting in the wings to go on stage. Although the situation is something familiar the exact event never happened the way it does in the dream so somethings changed.
Last night I dreamt I was at my daughter parents evening, but the teacher spent the whole time praising my son instead in front of all her friend. I took this as a sign I needed to talk to her to make sure she was ok as her brothers just been in a show and received a lot praise – so I had a little chat during the day and she was feeling much better about it.
So will any dream do?
While I wish I had Josephs understanding of dream symbology, I do like to work on my own interpretation. I get excited when I do recall a dream (usually because they are quite strange or out there).
